Wood Floors

 The wood floors are in.  Actually, they have been for a while, I've just been too busy to post lately!  They're quite dusty right now, as you might imagine.  We went over with the kids on Sunday evening and Ellie laid down in her pajamas and made dust angels.

Checklist

We're really close now!  Wish I had an exact date (birth metaphor again) but we know it's coming.  We are aiming for the first part of May.  So it's crazy million-decision time.  Nice, though, that we can actually make a checklist and when things are done, they are done.  I wish my dishes and laundry were like that.

Paint:  Painted.  Pretty good.  It's paint.  We can change it later if we hate it.  Check.

Tile: chosen, ordered.  Mostly installed.  Check.

Wood:  That was a doozy.  So many trips back and forth.  So many samples.  Being installed as I write this.  Check.

Carpet:  Chosen and ordered.  Can still opt for the "ballet pad" which our builder and Wendy think we should do.  Will be installed as soon as we're ready for it.  Half-check.

Garage Doors:  Almost chosen.  Must do that today.  Tonight.

Plumbing fixtures:  Meet with Jim the Plumber on Thursday to finalize.


Hardware:  Think we're going with doorknobs, not levers, since the latter break easily.  Time to peruse more online catalogs.  Gotta look at cabinet hardware.

Lights:  Picking up a bunch here and there from the local hardware store.  Half-check.

Phone:  Hopefully we didn't bury the other end of the wire somewhere.  Hmmmm . . .  If they just would have come out and spliced the wire when they said they would, before the snow fell last fall, then we probably wouldn't be wondering about this now.  Arg.  We don't pay them for what they do, so they have little (or no) motivation to come up here and help us out.  (Upcoming post:  Market forces at work in the installation of residential utilities.)

And - other minutia that bore you and me will need to be decided and done.


Then - WE MOVE IN AND HAVE A NEW HOUSE TO OUR VERY OWN SELVES!!!

And eventually we'll buy some furniture.

Week 8 - Friday, October 22 porch cap

See that pipe? It was there and the porch got poured right around it. Luckily, we cut it and pulled it out and they were able to fill it in before the cement cured.
They stayed and worked on this until after dark, about 9 o'clock.

This was Friday. Saturday and Sunday it rained, and rained. Mike tried to broom off some of the water, but it's still sopping wet. I guess most homes get rained on during construction. It may snow next week.
Trusses should come on Monday. Hopefully we can get enough of the big, ugly trench filled in before the truss truck comes.

week 4 - Wed, Sept 22-24 - cement floors

Look at that! We have a basement floor. And they finished the garage floor, too.

Notice the edges (in this up-side-down picture of the storage area)? We had them pour the floor to the height of the footings rather than four inches over, which is normally done. Hey, 4 extra inches of head room in the basement! We'll take it. It will be covered with carpet and we'll never notice.

It kept threatening to rain, but graciously held off until after the cement had set up for a couple of hours. That way it didn't mess it up - and actually helped strengthen it because it dried slower. Thanks, Weather.

We had a little cement left over. Dad and Leo rushed to prep that area right behind the basketball hoop. Our builder, Chad, came over and helped them finish getting it ready. Even the man driving the cement truck got out and started shoveling. Then we poured it in and they finished it up.

Thursday, September 23, they cut lines in the garage floor.

Friday, September 24, watched the cement dry.

Week 4 - Mon, Sept 20 - graveling

Today they graveled the floors in the basement and garage.
You can see the perforated pipe weaving around - that's for radon and excess water.
